Making Swoop dining chairs is always a satisfying and rewarding process especially when they are a thoughtfully-chosen commission. So a little about the chairs… The ‘swoop’ chair crest is steam bent and held in shape using a jig which I first developed years ago to provide the correct curvature for this chair style. The crest is then left in the jig to dry to ensure the shape is fixed in place. This step of the chair making process is the one with the highest risk of failure. The curve is quite tight and sometimes, even though the wood has been steamed to soften it and loosen the fibres within, the outer curve will splinter or crack. Thankfully, this doesn’t happen very often but when it does I try to re-use the wood to make smaller items like my ‘waste knot’ buttons.
